The State of Franklin flag is a historical and commemorative banner associated with the short-lived, unrecognized State of Franklin, a proposed autonomous territory that existed in the western regions of North Carolina (modern-day eastern Tennessee) between 1784 and 1788. The flag typically features a deep blue field symbolizing loyalty and perseverance, accompanied by a vertical green stripe at the fly end separated by a narrow white band. Centered on the blue field is a circular emblem containing a black-and-white portrait of Benjamin Franklin, the American Founding Father for whom the proposed state was named. The green ring surrounding Franklin’s likeness is often interpreted as representing growth, frontier opportunity, and the agricultural promise of the Appalachian settlements.

The State of Franklin emerged following the American Revolutionary War, when settlers in the Appalachian frontier sought political independence and greater self-governance due to geographic isolation from North Carolina’s eastern government centers. Although the state petitioned for admission to the United States under the Articles of Confederation, it ultimately failed to secure the necessary congressional support and was later reabsorbed into North Carolina before becoming part of Tennessee.
