Choosing the right flag attachment options

Grommets, Hoists and flag hanging

Hoist and grommet options

Because all FMP flags are custom-made, it is possible for us to manufacture any flag design with any type of hoist or grommet attachment.

This allows you to customise the flag for your needs: A flag with a pole sleeve which can be used on a pole, or a flag with four grommets for attaching to a wall.

Every customisation can be ordered directly from the product page, by checking the product options you need.

Grommeted hoist or pole sleeve?

A grometted hoist refers to a traditional strip of fabric used to strengthen the hoist side of a flag. This double-layered fabric is perforated with two brass grommets -allowing for a wide array of attachment and hanging options.

A pole sleeve, on the other hand, is a simple sleeved hoist that allows you to slide a pole into the fabric. This is perfect for carrying a flag during parades or conventions, but less ideal for hanging.

White or printed hoist?

Traditional flag hoists are white - a tradition harkening back to the cotton sown flags of old. Because our flags are digitally printed however, they can have hoists manufactured in any color you'd like. Simply add the color in the section marked 'Hoist' inside our flagmaker app!

Grommet placement and other attachment methods

Traditional flags are produced with two grommets on the hoist side. These grommets can be easily attached to flag poles using a simple ziptie or cord. By leaving some slack, this allows the flag to zip around in the wind, creating a nice fluttering effect.

If you are considering using your flag away from a flag pole however, you can consider a few other options.

Four Grommets or Top-Side Grommets

If the flag is intended to be displayed rather than flown, consider having your grommets placed on the top of the flag or in each corner. With this setup, you can:

  • Span a flag across a car hood or other gap using binders.
  • Hang a flag on a wall for decoration.

Tie-on pole attachments

Before the advent of modern materials and plastics, it was common to tie a flag down with cotton strips.

We do not offer this option by default, however. These days, zipties and grommets are a more durable way of attaching your flag, as these materials can handle the stress of moving in wind, and are more easily replaced when worn out.
