This flag, commonly referred to as the “Libertarian Socialist Gadsden Flag,” is a modern political reinterpretation of the historic Gadsden Flag. It retains the iconic coiled serpent and the defiant slogan “DON’T TREAD ON US,” but replaces the traditional yellow field with a stark black background, overlaid by a prominent red star. The serpent, here stylized as a multi-headed hydra, is wrapped around or emerging from the star, symbolizing collective resistance, decentralization of power, and revolutionary unity. The use of the red star - a widely recognized emblem of socialist and leftist movements - recontextualizes the original message of individual liberty into one of collective struggle against perceived oppression.
Historically, the original Gadsden Flag dates to the American Revolution and was associated with anti-authoritarian sentiment and colonial resistance.
