The Free Iran Pride flag is a multicolour horizontal flag combining the LGBT pride rainbow with the historic Lion and Sun emblem of Iran. The flag consists of six horizontal stripes - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet - arranged in the conventional pride flag order, symbolizing diversity, inclusion, and LGBTQ identity. Centered on the flag is a gold Lion and Sun emblem, depicting a lion holding a sword with a radiant sun rising behind it, a long-standing symbol of Iranian sovereignty, cultural continuity, and national identity.
Historically, the Lion and Sun motif was used in Persia and Iran for centuries, becoming a national emblem during the Safavid and Qajar periods and later appearing on Iran’s national flag until the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Following the establishment of the Islamic Republic, the emblem was removed and replaced with a religious symbol. In contemporary usage, the Free Iran Pride flag represents a convergence of Iranian opposition symbolism and LGBTQ rights advocacy. It is used by activists and members of the Iranian diaspora to express resistance to the current Iranian regime, opposition to state repression of LGBTQ people, and support for a future Iran defined by secular governance, civil liberties, and equal rights.
