We experience this feeling when we walk through the forests and villages, exploring the caverns and castles, and climbing the tallest mountain peaks. Historical meaning: The Slovak people have a unique identity that stems from our cultural heritage, history, and mother tongue passed down from our ancestors. The Double Cross was one of the first symbols used by our ancestors during the Principality of Nitra (825 AC - 1108 AC) The double cross represents the Christian faith. Its origins stem from the Byzantium missionaries of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius in the 9th Century. The emblem of the cross on mountain tops first appeared in the 14th Century as a symbol in Upper Hungary, which was inhabited by a mixture of Slovaks, Hungarians, Germans, and Ruthenians. Contemporary Meaning: Today, the double cross is standing on top of the middle peak of three hills: representing Tatra, Fatra, and Matra. The red, blue, and white stem from the pan-Slavic colours: symbolising unity and independence. 'Flag of the Slovaks' meaning: This flag features a white 'Slovak Cross' in front of a large blue background, with white and red strips on the bottom. Red symbolises the blood and shared ancestry, including the land we live together in harmony. White represents the peace and unity between the people, and the snow-toppled peaks of the three mountains around Slovakia. Blue is the main colour of the Slovak nation, and represents the sky. The Slovak Cross is the heart of the Slovak nation, and stands on top of the mountain peaks. The Slovak Cross: The white Slovak Cross is a reminder of the Christian faith, and to represent as an ethnic and national symbol of the Slovak people and Slovakia. It invokes the spiritual feeling that being born Slovak is to be born privileged, with music in our blood and poetry in our soul. Purpose for New Design: It is to offer a palingenesis to Slovak generations who will carry our heritage, culture, and language from the past, to the present, and to the future. The lightning are the voices of the old, and they will continue to strike for the new.
