The Flag of the Russian Soviet Federative Republic (RSFSR) was one of the earliest official flags of the Soviet state and served as the emblem of Soviet Russia following the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. The design consisted of a solid red field symbolizing the socialist revolution and the blood of workers and peasants, with a gold-bordered canton in the upper hoist bearing the stylized Cyrillic initials “РСФСР” (RSFSR). The typography, rendered in an ornamental early Soviet script, reflected the transitional aesthetic of post-imperial Russia, combining revolutionary symbolism with vestiges of pre-revolutionary decorative forms. The red field became a defining visual element of communist and Soviet flags worldwide.

Adopted in 1918 and modified in subsequent years, the RSFSR flag represented the largest and most influential republic within the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Its minimalist composition emphasized ideological clarity and revolutionary identity, predating the later addition of the hammer and sickle and red star that would characterize the broader Soviet flag tradition. As a historical European political flag, it occupies a central place in the study of Soviet vexillology and early 20th-century revolutionary symbolism.
