The Laser Loon Variant of the First Minnesota Volunteers Flag is a modern reinterpretation of the historic Civil War-era regimental flag associated with the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The flag retains the traditional deep blue field and central loon motif, a long-standing symbol of Minnesota, depicted with outstretched wings and perched on a pine branch. Above the loon appears the French motto L’Étoile du Nord (“The Star of the North”), referencing Minnesota’s state motto, while a red scroll below bears the inscription “FIRST MINNESOTA VOLUNTRS,” echoing period spelling conventions. The most distinctive contemporary alteration is the addition of stylized red laser beams emanating from the loon’s eyes, visually updating the historic emblem while maintaining its original heraldic composition.

Historically, the original First Minnesota Volunteers flag gained prominence during the American Civil War, particularly for the regiment’s decisive actions at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, where it suffered catastrophic casualties while holding Union lines. The Laser Loon Variant was designed at the request of the Minnesota community as a symbolic civil war–inspired adaptation and was popularized during the 2026 anti-ICE protests, where it emerged as a protest and identity symbol blending regional history with modern political expression. As such, the flag represents both a homage to Minnesota’s military heritage and an example of how historic symbols are recontextualized in contemporary civic movements.
