✒️ A flag for the short-lived Empire of China, associated with its author, Yuan Shikai. This flag was the state and national emblem of the short-lived imperial monarchy established by Yuan Shikai, who reigned as the Hongxian Emperor from 1915 to 1916. The design is a significant modification of the "Five Races Under One Union" concept, which was originally represented by a five-striped horizontal flag used by the preceding Republic of China. In this imperial version, the field is divided into four triangles—yellow (top, representing the Manchu), black (left/hoist, for the Tibetan), blue (right/fly, for the Mongol), and white (bottom, for the Hui/Muslim peoples). A prominent red saltire (St. Andrew's cross) is overlaid, symbolizing the dominant Han ethnicity uniting the other four races under its central authority.
The flag's history is brief and directly tied to Yuan Shikai's attempt to restore the monarchy. It was unveiled in late 1915 as part of the establishment of the new empire. However, the move was deeply unpopular and immediately triggered widespread revolt and civil conflict known as the National Protection War. The Empire of China officially lasted only 83 days, from December 1915 to March 1916, before Yuan Shikai was forced to abdicate his imperial title. Following the empire's dissolution and Yuan's death shortly thereafter, this flag was immediately abolished and fell into disuse, with the original five-striped flag of the Republic of China being restored.
