Appliqué (also spelled applique, and sometimes called a sewn or stitched flag) is a construction method, not a print. Instead of pushing ink into a single layer of fabric, we cut each element of your design from separate pieces of colored flag material and sew them together into the finished flag.

Because the design is made of real fabric panels stitched all the way through, it shows on both faces of the flag. The front reads correctly; the back reads as a mirror image. There's no faint, washed-out "ghost" of the design like you get on a single-sided printed flag; both sides are fully saturated, because both sides are the design.

Appliqué Flags: FAQ

Are appliqué flags double-sided?
Yes. The design is sewn all the way through, so it shows on both sides: front reads correctly, back reads as a mirror image, and both are fully saturated. There's no faded reverse like on a single-sided printed flag.

Is "applique" the same as "appliqué"?
Same thing, just with or without the accent. You'll also hear them called sewn flags or stitched flags.

What's the difference between appliqué and embroidered flags?
Appliqué builds the design from sewn fabric panels. Embroidery stitches thread directly into the fabric and is usually used for fine lettering or small emblems, and the two are often combined on one flag.

Are appliqué flags more durable than printed flags?
For long-term outdoor flying, generally yes; sewn construction and reinforced edges hold up well to sun and wind. Printed flags are better suited to events, indoor display, and detailed designs.

Can you appliqué any design?

How long do appliqué flags take to make?
Longer than printed flags, because each one is hand-assembled and requires several phases of print proofing.
