✒️ The Continental Navy, established in 1775, did not have a single, standardized flag throughout the American Revolution. Instead, a variety of flags were used during this period, reflecting the nascent navy's evolving identity and the ongoing struggle for independence. Early in the war, some Continental Navy ships likely flew modified British ensigns, the red flag with the Union Jack in the canton, by simply adding white stripes. This "Continental Colors" flag, also known as the "Grand Union Flag," displayed a symbol of unity with Britain while also signifying a distinct American character through the stripes. However, by June 1777, the Second Continental Congress removed the Union Jack, reflecting the growing desire for complete separation from Great Britain. Other flags with symbolic meaning also saw use during the war. The "Gadsden Flag," featuring a coiled rattlesnake and the motto "Don't Tread on Me," was a popular choice, particularly among the Continental Marines. Additionally, some naval vessels, particularly those from New England, may have used flags with pine trees as a symbol of defiance against British rule. The lack of a single, standardized ensign throughout the war highlights the evolving nature of the American identity and the Continental Navy itself. While the Grand Union Flag served as an early symbol, the eventual removal of the Union Jack and the use of flags with distinctly American iconography reflected the solidifying resolve for independence.
