The flag originated through the alliance between the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) and the Federación Anarquista Ibérica (FAI) during the period leading up to and throughout the Spanish Civil War. During the conflict, CNT-FAI militias played a major role in the Republican war effort and oversaw large-scale worker collectivization projects across Catalonia, Aragon, and other regions of Spain. The CNT-FAI flag has since become an enduring symbol of anarchism, workers' self-management, direct democracy, and revolutionary anti-authoritarian politics, frequently appearing in historical commemorations, labor demonstrations, and political activism.
