✒️ The white-red-white flag is a historical national flag of Belarus, widely used today as a symbol of the Belarusian pro-democracy movement and opposition to the government of Alexander Lukashenko. The flag consists of three equal horizontal bands: white on the top and bottom, with a red band in the center. The colors are believed to be derived from the traditional Belarusian coat of arms, the Pahonia, which features a white (silver) knight on a red shield. As such, the flag is deeply connected to the pre-Soviet history and national identity of Belarus, representing its historical ties to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Designed in 1917 by Claudius Duž-Dušeŭski, the white-red-white flag was first adopted as the state flag of the short-lived Belarusian People's Republic (1918–1919). Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it was re-established as the official flag of the newly independent Republic of Belarus from 1991 until 1995. After a controversial referendum in 1995, it was replaced by the current red-and-green flag, a modified version of the flag from the Byelorussian SSR. Since then, the white-red-white flag has become a powerful symbol of protest, most notably during the 2020–2021 Belarusian protests, and is now strongly associated with the struggle for democracy and national sovereignty in Belarus.
