The BDSM Pride Flag is based on the Leather Pride Flag created by Tony DeBlase in 1989 for the leather subculture. This particular flag, often referred to as the BDSM Pride Flag with Triskelion, incorporates a red triskelion emblem at its center, placed within a white disc. The underlying field consists of nine horizontal stripes in an alternating pattern of black and blue, which represents the colors associated with the leather and BDSM communities. This variation of the flag aims to be inclusive of the broader BDSM community, beyond just the leather subculture, by incorporating the universal symbol of balance and community.

Historically, the design emerged from the leather community to symbolize self-definition and pride. The nine-stripe pattern has been used on various flags representing leather groups and clubs, becoming a foundation for further modifications. The addition of the central emblem of the red triskelion – an ancient, three-armed spiral or triskele – is a later development. Within the context of the BDSM community, the triskelion often signifies balance, the interplay of different roles (such as top, bottom, and switch), and the three tenets sometimes associated with BDSM: Safe, Sane, and Consensual. It has since become a powerful, easily recognizable symbol representing BDSM pride, visibility, and community identity across diverse gender and sexual spectrums.
