This Archangel Michael depiction is a widely recognized alternative variant of the flag of Kyiv, featuring a specific depiction of Archangel Michael designed by artist Georgiy Kurovsky. When the Kyiv City Council moved to restore the city's historical symbols in May 1995, multiple design firms submitted proposals. Kurovsky's design—characterized by the archangel standing frontally in golden scale armor with a round shield—was highly prominent during the selection process. However, the council ultimately and officially approved a different, more dynamic variant designed by Y. Solominsky, which depicts the archangel in white robes holding an oval shield. Despite not receiving final official ratification, Kurovsky's variant remains deeply popular and is frequently utilized by the public, municipal organizations, and commercial flag manufacturers as a de facto representation of the Ukrainian capital.

The central iconography of this variant deeply connects to medieval European and Eastern Orthodox heraldic traditions. Unlike the official version where Saint Michael holds a shield charged with a cross, this specific artistic rendering features a round golden shield charged with a stylized eight-pointed star or sunburst. The vibrant azure background and golden-yellow palette intentionally mirror the national colors of Ukraine while emphasizing the archangel's role as the historical celestial guardian of the Dnieper region. Because it represents a key archival chapter in the city's post-Soviet heraldic revival, this variant holds a significant place in modern municipal vexillology.
