When the Kyiv City Council moved to restore the city's historical symbols in May 1995, multiple design firms submitted proposals. Kurovsky's design—characterized by the archangel standing frontally in golden scale armor with a round shield—was highly prominent during the selection process. However, the council ultimately and officially approved a different, more dynamic variant designed by Y. Solominsky, which depicts the archangel in white robes holding an oval shield.
