The Animal Farm Flag, created under the banner of Hoof and Horn, is the revolutionary banner of Animal Farm as depicted in George Orwell's seminal 1945 allegorical novella Animal Farm. The flag features a bold green field upon which a white hoof and horn are depicted in crossed formation, surmounted by a five-pointed star — symbols chosen by the animals to represent their newfound autonomy and the unity of the working beast. Green was selected to represent the fields of England, while the hoof and horn served as the animal equivalent of the hammer and sickle, drawing a direct parallel to Soviet communist iconography and the ideals of Animalism as preached by the pig Old Major.
In Orwell's narrative, the flag was designed and hoisted following the successful rebellion against farmer Mr. Jones, intended to inspire solidarity and revolutionary pride among the farm's animal population. Over the course of the story, the flag becomes an increasingly hollow symbol as the ruling pigs — most notably Napoleon — progressively corrupt the founding ideals of Animalism, mirroring the broader critique of Stalinist Soviet propaganda and the perversion of socialist revolution. The flag endures as one of literature's most recognisable fictional emblems, representing both the promise and the betrayal of utopian political movements.
