✒️ The Sabot-Cat flag, often referred to as the Sabo-Tabby, is a historic and enduring symbol of anarcho-syndicalism, particularly associated with the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). The design features a black cat in an aggressive, fighting posture with an arched back and bared claws, symbolizing radical unionism, wildcat strikes, and sabotage as forms of direct action by workers. The cat is typically set against a diagonally bisected background of red and black, the traditional colors of anarcho-syndicalism and anarcho-communism, representing the fusion of anarchist (black) and socialist or labor movement (red) ideals. The image of the cat serves as an icon for rank-and-file militancy and defiance against employers and capitalist structures. The black cat symbol was created by Ralph Chaplin, a prominent IWW artist and organizer, during the turbulent American labor struggles of the early 20th century. It was conceived as a symbol for workers to use to signify their intent to engage in sabotage to win better working conditions. According to Chaplin, the idea arose from the story of a striking worker's black cat walking into the strike camp, after which the strike's fortunes immediately turned for the better. The Sabot-Cat was quickly adopted by the IWW and became one of its most recognizable emblems, representing the organization's commitment to direct action at the point of production.
