✒️ Alternative New Zealand flag – 080519 Designer: Jonathan Lee, design dated 19 May 2008. “I designed this flag as an evolutionary development of Admiral Markham’s 1906 adaptation of the British blue ensign. I’ve attempted to portray the principal features of the origins, history, and aspirations of our nation. At the same time, I’ve striven for simplicity and visual impact. It’s contemporary with sufficient solemnity worthy of celebration as well as commemoration.” Description (blazon) The field is divided into three vertical pales: the central (middle chief) field is white (argent); the hoist part (sinister chief) is blue (azure) separated from the white by red (gules) lines of partition with black (stable) borders; the fly (dexter chief) is the reverse of the hoist. At the centre of the white field is a motif (charge) of four five-pointed outward-pointing red stars (mullets) with black borders in vertical and horizontal alignment. Specifications Given as a proportion of the hoist: Field The hoist: 60 and the fly: 100 Blue pale at hoist and fly 15 wide, Red pale of partition 8 wide, including the black borders, each of 2, Central white pale 50 wide, Red stars Located centrally, each 15 wide including a black border of 1, with a space of 20 between the crux of each star vertically and horizontally. Colours Blue RGB: red 0; green 0; blue 128, or Pantone 280C. Red RGB: red 255; green 0; blue 0, or Pantone 186C. White RGB: red 0; green 0; blue 0; or Pantone SAFE. Interpretation Here are some of the inspirations that inspired the designer: Blue and white pales are a reference to the seas surrounding the islands of New Zealand. They also a refer to tricolour flags, indicating liberty, equality, and community, and are inspired by the symmetry and clarity of the Canadian flag. The white signifies our values of truth, sincerity, peace, and integrity. Blue signifies our ideals of loyalty, strength and faith. Red line of partition is a reference to the blood of our ancestors and that of those who have given themselves for their country. It is also a reference to the partitions of the United Kingdom’s Union Flag in the canton of Admiral Markham’s design and the long association with Britain and the Commonwealth. Red signifies our passion and compassion – the creative values of warriors – and the hope implicit in our willingness to embrase risk. The black borders are a reference to the use of black in Māori culture, including the 1834 Flag of the United Tribes of New Zealand, and an acknowledgment of importance of the Treaty of Waitangi in the evolution of New Zealand society. Black also ignifies our aspiration to wisdom, constancy, and prudence developed through suffering. In addition, it provides a tonal contrast, enabling the red to stand out. The stars are a reference to the red stars of the Crux or Southern Cross of Admiral Markham’s design, acknowledging our home is in the southern hemisphere. Importantly, they also represent the different ethnic groups making up the nation - recognising our indigenous Māori - unitted as one people. The stars are outward facing to representing the connection of New Zealand with the rest of the world. The five points also represent people, and the positioning infers being in community with each other, while respecting each other’s equality and individuality. The space between the stars infers the shape of a diamond representing the invisible bond between the peoples of New Zealand is something greater than the sum of its individual parts, and of immense spiritual value. © Jonathan Millhouse Lee 2008
