Blackbeard, also known as Edward Teach, was a notorious pirate who sailed the seas in the early 18th century. His flag is a legendary design that features a horned skeleton holding an hourglass and a spear piercing a heart. The flag is meant to intimidate and threaten the victims of Blackbeard’s raids, implying that they have no chance of survival or mercy. However, there is no historical evidence that Blackbeard actually used this flag, and it may be a modern invention1. According to sources, Blackbeard flew a black flag with a skull on it along with a blood red flag rather than the devil flag. The design of the flag consisted of a horned skeleton raising an hourglass “toasting the Devil” in its right hand. In the skeleton’s left hand, it held a spear pointing towards a red heart which had three drops of red blood below it, supposedly to signal that no quarter would be given2.
