The flag of Ukraine consists of two equal horizontal bands: blue on the top and yellow on the bottom. The blue stripe traditionally represents the sky, while the yellow stripe symbolizes the fertile wheat fields that characterize much of Ukraine’s landscape. This simple bicolor design has become a widely recognized national symbol, associated with peace, prosperity, and the country’s agricultural heritage. The modern Ukrainian flag is defined by its clarity and strong color contrast, contributing to its high visibility and symbolic power.

The blue-and-yellow colors have roots in medieval heraldry, appearing in banners and coats of arms used by Kyivan Rus’ and later by Cossack hosts and regional principalities. The flag emerged in its modern form during the 19th century amid Ukrainian national revival movements and was officially adopted briefly following the declaration of independence in 1917. After periods of suppression under Soviet rule, the flag was restored and formally re-adopted as the national flag of Ukraine on 28 January 1992, following the country’s independence in 1991. Since then, the Ukrainian flag has become an enduring emblem of national identity, sovereignty, and resistance, especially prominent during major political and social movements in the 21st century.
