At its center is the "Compass Crown," an eight-pointed emblem symbolizing Springfield& role as a crossroads of America, with the upper points forming a crown to reflect the city& nickname, "Queen City of the Ozarks." Above this emblem are three four-pointed stars representing the city& innovative spirit, connection with nature, and Ozarks culture. A broad white horizontal stripe signifies both the Ozark Plateau and the historic Route 66, while the light blue background evokes the region& water and skies. In 2023, the North American Vexillological Association ranked Springfield& flag among the top new city flags in the United States.
