This distinctive emblem, known as "NO8DO," is the official motto of the city and is widely believed to be a rebus. The "8" in the middle represents a skein of wool, which in Spanish is "madeja." When read quickly and with a Sevillian accent, "NO madeja DO" sounds like "no me ha dejado," meaning "She [Seville] has not abandoned me." This motto is popularly attributed to King Alfonso X "the Wise," who, according to legend, took refuge in Seville during a rebellion by his son Sancho and was grateful for the city& loyalty. The crimson red color of the flag is associated with the historical standard of Saint Ferdinand, who reconquered Seville in 1248.
