✒️ The Betsy Ross flag is an iconic design for the early flag of the United States. It features thirteen alternating red and white horizontal stripes, mirroring the thirteen original colonies. A blue canton, the rectangular area in the upper left corner of the flag, displays thirteen five-pointed white stars arranged in a circle. This design follows the guidelines laid out in the Flag Act of 1777, passed during the American Revolutionary War. Though widely popular, the story attributing the design to upholsterer Betsy Ross is not substantiated by historical evidence. Descendants of Ross claimed she sewed the flag at the behest of George Washington and other prominent figures, but no documentation from the period supports this. While Ross undoubtedly produced flags for the Continental Army, there's no proof she designed this specific one. Despite the uncertain origins, the Betsy Ross flag remains a recognizable symbol of American patriotism. Its design served as the official flag of the United States from 1777 to 1795, when the addition of new states necessitated a modification to the star pattern.
