✒️ The flag of Taunton, Massachusetts, also known as the Taunton Flag or the Liberty and Union Flag, is the official city flag. Adopted in 1774, it holds a unique place in American Revolutionary history. The design incorporates elements of both British and American identity. A red field, reminiscent of the British Red Ensign, dominates the background. In the canton, the upper left corner, sits the Union Jack, symbolizing the colonists' initial desire for reform within the British Empire rather than complete independence. However, defying this symbol of allegiance are the bold words "Liberty and Union" stitched across the lower portion of the flag. This inscription captures the colonists' complex sentiments – a yearning for self-governance while still valuing a degree of unity with Britain. The Taunton Flag gained recognition after the Boston Evening-Post published a story featuring it. It is considered one of the earliest flags used in the Thirteen Colonies to express dissent against British rule, paving the way for more radical symbols of revolution.
