✒️ The Bedford Flag, also known as the Bedford Minuteman Flag, is considered the oldest surviving American flag carried into battle. While its exact origins remain debated, it holds historical significance as a symbol of the American Revolution and the role of militia during the conflict. The flag itself is a small square, measuring roughly 27 by 29 inches, constructed from crimson silk damask. A design is painted on both sides, featuring a mailed arm emerging from clouds and grasping a sword. Three cannonballs hang nearby. Encircling the arm is a gold ribbon bearing the Latin motto "VINCE AUT MORIRE" ("Conquer or Die"). Notably, the design is asymmetrical on the two sides, with the sword's position and the direction of the motto reading reversed. Though traditionally credited as the flag carried by the Bedford Minutemen at the Battle of North Bridge on April 19, 1775, the flag predates the revolution itself. Historical evidence suggests it was originally crafted for a Massachusetts Bay militia cavalry troop during the earlier French and Indian Wars.
