The banner symbolized the clique's vast military and political autonomy, distinguishing it from other factions vying for control of the Republic of China. It served as a potent symbol of regional power in Manchuria until the Northeast Flag Replacement incident in 1928, when Zhang Xueliang declared allegiance to the Nationalist government in Nanjing, effectively ending the clique's independence and retiring this banner in favor of the Nationalist flag.
