✒️ During the American Revolution (1775-1783), Great Britain flew the Union Jack as its national flag. This flag, established in 1606, represented the union of the crowns of England and Scotland under King James I. The Union Jack combines elements from the flags of England and Scotland. The red cross of Saint George, patron saint of England, forms a vertical and horizontal base. Superimposed upon this is the diagonal white saltire of Saint Andrew, patron saint of Scotland. Wales and Ireland were not explicitly represented on the flag during the Revolutionary War. The Union Jack remained the sole flag flown by British forces throughout the conflict. It served as a symbol of British authority and the existing political structure that the American colonists were rebelling against. While some variations of the flag, such as the Red Ensign used by the British Navy, existed, the Union Jack represented the British crown's claim to the American colonies.
