Overall, the flag of Appalachia seeks to create a unifying symbol for the Appalachian region. It achieves this by neglecting to include any symbols that have the potential to divide the region. Instead, the design opts to choose the only unequivocally unifying symbol of Appalachia; the very mountains that we call home. The green of the forests that blanket the mountains, the blue taken from the deep blue hue that the distant mountains appear to be on the horizon, and the gold of a new morning sun rising over the mountains combine to depict the uniquely beautiful mountainous landscape of Appalachia. Moreover, the multi-shaded geometric organization of the flag is reminiscent of quilting, a common and iconic craft shared by many throughout the region. The central 8-pointed star is a design that is featured in many "barn star" paintings found on the sides of many Appalachian barns and households. The star is also a very common symbol in quilting. The off-white color of the star is taken directly from the color of cloth, representative of a blank canvas that each Appalachian can use to insert their own unique identity and background.
